Trending: Electric Cars

The option of buying and operating an electric car is making considerable progress in the U.S. More consumers are seeking them as an alternative to traditional cars that operate on gas. The most common reasons given by many include:

  • They are friendlier to the environment since there are no emissions from fuel combustion
  • They don't require gas, so fuel savings are substantial
  • General maintenance costs are believed to be lower as EVs have fewer moving parts to break down or wear out
  • Improved self-image with owners who place a high value on appearing to be socially conscious
  • A desire to be in the forefront of adopting new technology

Another factor is likely to add to the market attraction of EVs once the public becomes more aware. The factor is vehicle safety.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration routinely tests cars for their level of safety in crashes. Its testing in recent years has included a limited number of EV models. So far, EVs are receiving safety ratings that are higher than gas cars. In general, they are safer for several reasons.

Center of Gravity - compared to traditional engine placement, EV batteries ae placed lower in the vehicle. This reduces the possibility of rollovers during accidents. Naturally, this significantly reduces the likelihood of severe injuries and fatalities.

Impact Absorption - gas engines are quite rigid and, during crashes, the force applied to them is transferred to the rest of the car, including occupants. EV battery arrays handle impacts quite differently. They break down and absorb the energy that is applied to them. Therefore, occupants are subject to a lower amount of force during crashes.

Fuel Danger - EVs don't include fuel tanks. Their absence means there is no danger of fuel-related loss such as gas explosions or fires from escaped fuel.

While there are the above positives for the growing popularity of EVs, there are also other issues that bear attention, including insurance. See our article "Insuring Electric Cars" for more information.
